Morocco 7-Day Itinerary — The Classic Route

Seven days is the ideal length for a first visit to Morocco. You can experience the imperial city of Marrakech, the raw magic of the Sahara Desert, the ancient medina of Fes, and the iconic blue streets of Chefchaouen — all connected by a scenic drive through the Atlas Mountains.

This is the route taken by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. It works. Here is how to do it properly.

Day 1–2: Marrakech

Fly into Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). The city rewards slow exploration — resist the urge to rush and simply let the medina pull you in.

Day 1 highlights:

  • Arrive and check into your riad in the medina
  • Afternoon: Djemaa el-Fna square — the beating heart of Marrakech
  • Evening: Eat at the food stalls on the square (freshly squeezed orange juice: 4 MAD)
  • Night: Explore the souks off Rue Mouassine

Day 2 highlights:

  • Morning: Jardin Majorelle (book tickets in advance — sells out) + Yves Saint Laurent Museum if interested
  • Afternoon: Bahia Palace and El Badi Palace
  • Late afternoon: Hammam experience (try Hammam de la Rose or Les Bains de Marrakech)
  • Evening: Rooftop dinner in the medina — Nomad or Le Jardin

Where to stay in Marrakech: A riad in the medina is the authentic choice. Budget: 300–500 MAD/night. Mid-range: 600–1,200 MAD. Luxury riads: 1,500+ MAD.

Day 3: Drive Through the High Atlas to Dades Valley

This is the classic overland route south. Hire a private driver or rent a car for maximum flexibility (a driver costs around 500–700 MAD/day and is worth it for the mountain roads).

  • Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m) — dramatic mountain scenery
  • Ait Benhaddou — UNESCO-listed ksar, used in Game of Thrones filming
  • Ouarzazate — “door of the desert”, optional Atlas Studios visit
  • Draa Valley — date palms, kasbahs, and red rock canyons
  • Sleep at a guesthouse in the Dades Valley

Day 4: Merzouga — Sleep in the Sahara

This is the day everyone talks about. Drive from Dades to Merzouga through the Todra Gorge — a 300-metre-high canyon that deserves a 1-hour stop — then continue east to Erg Chebbi, Morocco’s most dramatic sand dunes.

Day 5: Drive to Fes via Midelt and the Middle Atlas

The drive from Merzouga to Fes (approximately 6–7 hours) cuts through the Middle Atlas Mountains — completely different landscape from the south. Cedar forests, Berber villages, and the charming town of Midelt for lunch.

  • Sunrise in the desert camp
  • Drive north through Erfoud, Errachidia
  • Lunch in Midelt (Auberge Amlal for tajine)
  • Arrive Fes by evening
  • Check into your riad in Fes el-Bali (the medina)

Day 6: Fes el-Bali — The Oldest Living Medieval City in the World

Fes el-Bali is one of the most extraordinary places on earth — a fully functioning medieval city with 9,400 streets. A guide is strongly recommended for your first morning here (200–300 MAD for half a day).

  • Chouara Tanneries — see leather being dyed in traditional vats (come early morning for best light)
  • Bou Inania Madrasa — stunning Islamic architecture
  • University of al-Qarawiyyin — founded in 859 AD, the world’s oldest continuously operating university
  • Souk el-Attarine — spice market
  • Evening: Dinner at Ruined Garden or The Peacock Pavilion

Day 7: Chefchaouen — The Blue City

Chefchaouen is 3 hours from Fes by CTM bus or shared taxi (40–60 MAD). The town’s signature blue-and-white streets are genuinely beautiful and less overwhelming than Marrakech or Fes.

  • Morning: Wander the blue medina — get lost, sit in cafes, photograph the alleys
  • Noon: Spanish Mosque viewpoint (20-minute hike) — best panoramic view of the city
  • Afternoon: Hike above town or take the bus to Tangier (2.5 hours) for departure

From Chefchaouen, take a bus or shared taxi to Tangier (for flight home) or back to Casablanca (4 hours).
