Do I Need a Visa for Morocco?

Morocco is one of the most accessible countries in Africa for international tourists. Citizens of over 68 countries can enter Morocco visa-free for up to 90 days, including virtually all Western nations.

There is no pre-registration, no eVisa, no online application for visa-exempt nationalities. You simply arrive at the airport or land border, hand over your passport, and receive a stamp.

Countries That Don’t Need a Visa for Morocco (90 Days)

The following major nationalities can visit Morocco for up to 90 days without any visa:

  • 🇳🇿 New Zealand
  • 🇯🇵 Japan

Countries That DO Need a Visa for Morocco

Citizens of the following countries must apply for a Moroccan visa before travel:

  • 🇮🇳 India
  • 🇵🇰 Pakistan
  • 🇧🇩 Bangladesh
  • 🇮🇩 Indonesia
  • 🇳🇬 Nigeria
  • 🇬🇭 Ghana
  • 🇿🇦 South Africa (requires eVisa or embassy visa)

Morocco Visa on Arrival — What to Expect

For visa-exempt nationalities, the border process at Marrakech, Casablanca, Fes, or Agadir airports is simple:

  • Join the “Contrôle des Passeports” (passport control) queue
  • Hand over your passport (open to the photo page)
  • The officer may ask: your accommodation address, purpose of visit (tourism), how long you’re staying
  • You receive a stamp — that’s it. No form to fill, no fee to pay.

Passport Validity Requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date. If your passport expires sooner than 6 months from when you arrive, you will likely be denied entry. This is standard across most countries.

Extending Your Stay Beyond 90 Days

If you want to stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit (carte de séjour) from the local prefecture. This is a longer process requiring local address registration, bank statements, and reason for extended stay (work, study, retirement).

There is no simple “border run” extension available for Morocco — overstaying can result in fines and entry bans.

Entering Morocco by Land or Ferry

The same visa rules apply for land and sea entry:

  • By ferry from Spain (Tarifa → Tangier Ville, or Algeciras → Tangier Med) — passport control takes place on the ferry or at the port. Same 90-day stamp applies.
  • By land from Ceuta or Melilla — these are Spanish territories; crossing into Morocco requires a passport stamp at the Moroccan border post
  • By land from Algeria — the Morocco-Algeria land border has been closed since 1994 and remains closed in 2026
